All IHAN practitioners are appropriately licensed, certified, or credentialed for the services they provide and practice within their applicable professional scope. Many generously volunteer their professional time and expertise to make this care available to firefighters and communities impacted by disaster.
AcupunctureAcupuncture is a traditional East Asian medicine practice that is now widely used around the world, including as a complementary approach for pain management, stress, and overall wellbeing. At many of our clinics, IHAN partners with Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB), an international nonprofit that has provided community-based acupuncture and trauma-informed care in response to natural disasters, humanitarian crises, displacement, and communities affected by conflict around the world.
Licensed acupuncturists use very fine, sterile needles or non-needle ear seeds at specific points based on the individual and the setting. In disaster-response clinics, care is often provided in a community setting designed to create a calm, accessible space for rest and nervous system regulation. Many IHAN clinics incorporate the NADA protocol, a standardized five-point ear acupuncture protocol that has been used in behavioral health, community wellness, and disaster-response settings. Within IHAN clinics, acupuncture is offered to support relaxation, stress regulation, sleep, physical comfort, and recovery during and after demanding fire deployments. |
Massage Therapy, Sports Medicine & Physical TherapyThese hands-on and movement-based therapies support musculoskeletal health, mobility, relaxation, and physical recovery. Practitioners draw from approaches that may include therapeutic massage, deep tissue work, craniosacral therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, sports medicine techniques, physical therapy, mobility work, and other rehabilitative modalities based on their training and scope of practice.
In our firefighter wellness clinics, these services address the physical demands associated with heavy protective gear, long shifts, repetitive movement, and extended fire deployments. Care is individualized to help relieve muscular tension and discomfort, support mobility and recovery, and provide firefighters with an opportunity to rest and reset during and after demanding deployments. |
Naturopathic MedicineNaturopathic Doctors (NDs) are licensed healthcare professionals trained in clinical medicine and evidence-informed naturopathic care. Their approach emphasizes individualized, whole-person care and may include clinical assessment, diagnostic evaluation, nutrition and lifestyle medicine, and other therapeutic interventions within their licensed scope of practice.
In IHAN’s firefighter wellness clinics, NDs play a central clinical role. They assess participants, review health histories, screen for potential contraindications, and provide individualized care following wildfire smoke and occupational exposures. When clinically appropriate, this may include medically supervised administration of nebulized or IV glutathione, as well as care focused on respiratory health, stress regulation, sleep, nutrition, and overall metabolic and cardiovascular wellness. Naturopathic care may also incorporate nutritional strategies, lifestyle guidance, and mind-body approaches as part of an individualized plan to support recovery and long-term wellbeing. All clinical services provided through IHAN are delivered by appropriately licensed healthcare professionals within their scope of practice. Nursing & Nurse Practitioner Care
Registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) are an important part of IHAN’s multidisciplinary clinical teams. Working within their professional scopes of practice and established clinical protocols, they help assess and monitor patients, administer appropriate treatments, and support safe, coordinated care. Their clinical expertise is especially valuable in IHAN’s high-volume disaster response and firefighter wellness settings, where careful monitoring, patient education, and collaboration across disciplines are essential.

HeartMath®
HeartMath® is a mind-body approach that incorporates paced breathing, attention-focusing techniques, and heart-rate variability (HRV) biofeedback to build awareness of physiological responses to stress and support self-regulation.
In our firefighter wellness clinics, HeartMath® sessions introduce practical techniques that firefighters can use both during deployments and in everyday life. Using guided breathing and, when available, HRV biofeedback technology, participants can observe changes in their heart-rate patterns in real time while practicing techniques designed to support relaxation, focus, and stress regulation.
These techniques are simple, portable, and designed to be practiced independently, giving first responders another tool for managing the demands of high-stress and unpredictable environments.
HeartMath® sessions are provided by appropriately trained practitioners and are offered as a supportive wellness practice, not as a substitute for medical or mental health care.
